chatwithdeath: Official Art (Consider the facts)

There was someone in the lab already. Dressed in a pinstripe suit with a liberal amount of nothing in the front except for two beaded necklaces and a collar tie, the woman tapped her thigh-high, high-heeled boots and only turned her head when he entered. Sharp blue eyes focused on him intensely as she brushed some of her hair aside and crossed her arms beneath her chest.

"I'm in the middle of working. What do you want?"

She probably looked annoyed, but who wouldn't be? He wasn't the first person to interrupt her, he wasn't going to be the last, and if anyone came in here just for the all intense purpose of finding out if the rumors around her were real, she was seeing them out.

There was another reason for her to become annoyed. While Naomi had an... idea who this was, coming in and talking about looking at the bodies? Excuse her...

"And? Would you care to properly introduce yourself before asking to look at them?"

He can be annoyed; looking over public interviews would be a waste of time.

"I probably should tell you to get started on those interviews for slipping up that much."

Point was, she couldn't just let anyone look at her bodies or be in her room without giving her their rank and name. This case was still a hot bed. Never knew who would attempt to slip into even her room.

"That's better."

She had been right, but she needed to see his badge and ID still. Anyway, a look over and she nodded, turning back to the body.

"Well, Detective, do what you want. Besides the posthumous external injuries from where the bodies were recovered, there isn't much to see though. That's what you wanted to confirm, yes?"

"That's right. We have a time of death, but no cause. Even the rare causes of sudden brain death wouldn't explain this... not to mention some of the victims have no previous family records of potential diseases."

Uncrossing her arms, she nodded.

"Yes, they're both male and female. Though, besides that... there's no potential connection between any of them either."

Much like the Inaba murder cases, the death count started to drop after a certain amount of time. Those who went missing would suddenly reappear unharmed, if shaken. It did nothing for the media's encroaching questions about a copycat killer.

But none of that was really important to the girl sitting quietly and staring down at her hands. Gwendolyn Dellingr, age 16...this wasn't her first visit to the police station, either. The first was when the death of her sister, Griselda, raised many questions. Involvement in criminal activity, anyone looking to hurt her...it pained Gwendolyn to talk about her now lost sister, but she provided everything she could on the matter.

It was also the only time her father came with her. All that time, his focus was on his deceased daughter.

Gwendolyn sits alone after being picked up by the police, emotionally exhausted after the hell she endured in her dungeon. Lingering traces of smudged make-up trailed beneath her eyes despite the many tear-soaked tissues. Certainly, the girl was shocked about all of this, but she could still listen and respond. She could tell them what happened.

Not that she expected anyone to believe her. How can she expect the police to believe talk of shadows and dungeons and personas? Even with some of that being made public, it's still a lot for anyone to wrap their heads around, Gwendolyn included. Still, it's what she'll tell them. She doesn't have the energy to lie or come up with a story...

"I wouldn't be surprised if it was people taking advantage of the situation. The city can be cutthroat..."

Either way, she was technically done with the body. However, if he still had something to look at, she didn't roll it back to a locker yet.

"Ridiculous, huh? Well, if you feel the need to warn me, but I'm sure you heard the rumors. Try me on this 'ridiculous' notion."

The girl looks up and offered the detective a nod. She'd been staring so long that she forgot she was even in here, jolting back into action when he calls out to her. She blinks a few times and focuses her attention on him.

"Yes."

She stopped crying not too long ago, but she does look over the box of tissues, expecting to need them soon. Gwendolyn takes a sip of that water and breathes a small sigh.

"I'm...sorry if I'm taking up your time, detective."

"Good because I intend to work and not be a spectacle. Interrupt me over it and I'll revoke your access to the bodies."

They needed her for this; she did have a certain amount of power. For now, he seemed finished so she wheeled the body back to its locker. In it went and she shut the door, locking it.

"I've studied the Inaba Murder Case, yes. It was paramount and provided incite. However... if someone or someones are repeating this, what really needs to be uncovered is how this ability has surfaced again."

"Of course. If it will help with the case, then I'll tell you everything I can."

She's tired. Absolutely. She wants to just go home and sleep, but...part of her didn't want to go home right away. Seeing her inner self, facing those true thoughts about her family...she wasn't sure if she wanted to deal with her father right now. Not after all of this.

"I'm...not entirely sure."

She seems doubtful, glancing down at her hands once again. How is she going to put this...

She shakes her head.

"I think I know, but I can't describe it without sounding insane. It...felt as though I was trapped in myself. Everything about where I was felt like a reflection of me. It was real, however. I could walk along the floor and touch the walls..."

The girl tenses up.

"They called it a...dungeon..."

"I see..."

His nephew and his friends hadn't been really included in the official reports, but they did appear briefly when it covered Adachi's capture. They had been with him at Junes of all places - somehow the security cameras didn't catch them going in and out? How strange...

"I don't suspect they're behind this. At least, not behind kidnapping. There are no personal connections between them or any of the victims, and besides a few more prolific individuals, they wouldn't have a reason to interact with the deceased prior to their disappearances."

"They..."

Oswald and his friends. They all risked their lives to save hers. They saw that inner turmoil that so few before them even knew about. And when it was over, after Gwendolyn could finally accept her shadow and exhaustion caught up with her, Oswald held her in his arms with that look of joy and concern that made her smile. He really does care about her...and she's starting to care right back...

"...The heroes from the news. They rescued me and told me about dungeons. They said dungeons mirror a person's heart, especially the parts we don't admit to."

Gwendolyn takes a deep breath and sets down the cup, steeling herself.

"Mine took the shape of a circus. Every aspect of it was run by the same person: myself. Rather, my 'shadow,' as they put it. She adjusted the lights, ran the concession stands, served as the ringleader...and so on. She strived to put out the greatest show in history and performed all manner of stunts. From tightrope walking, lion taming...my...fourth grade band class..."

It ranged from "Exactly what you'd expect from a circus" to "anything Gwen felt like was an achievement," is what she's trying to say.

"...My shadow even played the part of the lion. It was...odd, watching her jump through hoops in that suit. I-in any case, she always glanced at an empty seat in the audience. It was reserved for someone who never came. Every time she looked at it, she grew more angry and desperate..."

"Hm... Well, I can't say they have or haven't been rescuing the other kidnapping victims. Just the same as people taking advantage of the situation, there might be others doing the rescuing this time."

Considering the lockers, there's not really any need to look at the other victims right now.

"You've seen the few photos of the vigilantes going around by now, correct?"

Headquarters? Hell no. Dojima likely knew better than to hop into the hideout of the Dragons or the Skulls.

The best way to speak to Boss Guzma is to entice him with something he can't deny, and the big boss was a hell of a sweet tooth.

It was a quiet diner, with many of the customers there seated on the furthest opposing end of the place as possible, as grunts were munching away on hamburger steak and fries and taking down drinks like it was nobody's business but theirs. But Guzma had helped himself to a chocolate milkshake, feet up on the table and leaned back in his chair. He physically was checked out of this whole thing, but there was a logic in letting a sniffing cop know the truth so the authorities would go bother someone else for a change.

It was clear to many that both the Dragons and the Skulls had been slowing their roll lately in their rivalry. Why?

"Whatchu want, my sad backstory, or are we doing the dance where you dumps pin something unrelated on me 'cause you're short on your quota?"
